Common myths and superstition in Sindh
Article Isra Soomro Roll # 23
When I was about to come into this world, my mom is pretty
but she start getting prettier. So everyone told her that you are going to give
birth to a baby boy. As in Sindh it is said for a pregnant women, if "she
gets pretty while her pregnancy, she is going give birth to a boy" and if
"she start getting ugly she is going to birth to a girl", but it is
just a myth. The beauty and physical appearance of anyone depends on nutrition
. As everyone knows that a pregnant woman needs meal for two, one for her and one
for the lil one in her womb , if she
doesn't get proper subsistence , that is obvious it will effect her physical
appearance. So that's clear in my mom's case it is totally a myth , as they
welcomed a baby girl(me). There is an other very common superstition in Sindh
for a pregnant woman while moon eclipse. A pregnant woman is told to "Rest
complete day and to keep knife with her" on moon eclipse. Because it is a
strong blieve that if a pregnant woman does any activity like stitching cutting
etc it will be visible on baby after the birth. Our elders said they have seen
such babies who's eyes where like someone has kitted them and the reason behind
it was that their mother were knitting
sweater in their pregnancy while moon eclipse. I don't know how much truth and
fact are in this story because superstition stories are so old that I think
that baby with knitted eyes had grow old and die in his 80's. These
superstition stories don't have any background these are just believed my
everyone, on precaution modes. In future when u and me, gonna face same phase
of life trust me we are definitely going to follow same precaution modes
(keeping knife beside us in pregnancy ,while moon eclipse).
There are not only myths and superstition in Sindh regarding
to pregnancy or pregnant woman. Let me share some more with you, our elders
always says not to sweep at the night or after sunset, they believe
"Sweeping home after sunset takes sustenance from home", but the
reality is quite different from the belief. Actually when this superstitious
was givein it was era when there was no light so after sunset it becomes dark
and if any precious thing just like gold or diamond earring is fallen so in
such scenario it would be monetary suicides
to Sweep The floor. I believe lose of expensive item is equivalent to
lose of sustenance. So the superstition saying is correct some how.
Let me share some superstitious myths regarding to bad luck
. Such as, there is a superstition belief that "Hanging of lemon and seven
chilies keeps bad luck away from your property", but the science says the
aroma produced fron the acid , combined
by lemon and chilies keeps pests and insects away from your property. There are
some more superstition saying for bad luck such as , "Black cat cross ur
path brings bad luck'. "Hanging of horseshoe keeps bad luck away" .
There is one more belief , "Braking of glass' , there is a conflict on
this myth. Some blieve it's good luck and some says it's sign of bad luck.
How could I forget so famous superstition "When a crow
crows on a roof top".It is a sign of arrival of guests. That is a sweet
myth. But crows do that all the time and you really cannot count on them. More
of a rural myth I guess as in this smartpone /dumbpeople era, everybody relies
on their phone rather than crows. I remember my grandma use to say take the
name of the people u know, after the crow's crows , as u select correct name of
the person who is going to visit crow will run away.
These are not the only myths there so others , I think I can
write a book on them. Each and every myth has its own facts and beliefs and
complete society rely on these myth and you can't argue with anyone's about
their believes.
WOW. This Sounds Good. A True Reality.
